Is Nora’s decision to leave her husband and children acceptable?- A DOLL'S HOUSE

At the end of the play, Nora decides to leave her husband because she believed that she was married to a person who she does not know very well and she had been held captive by her husband. “it was then it dawned upon me that for eight years I have been living here with a strange man, and had borne him three children--. Oh, I can't bear to think of it! I could tear myself into little bits!”

Nora never gave Torvald a chance to prove himself as a husband after she decided things were not working out and that he was showing complete immaturity. “I have the strength to change.” Torvald says, “Perhaps - if your doll (Nora) is taken from you” Nora replies. Helmer in desperation begs her, “No, no Nora. I cannot conceive of it happening!”. Obviously, Nora decided that leaving his husband is the best choice without giving him a chance to prove himself. This was the first and only time throughout the play when she confronts him because of a problem and once she does, she leaves. As Nora is leaving the house, Torvald starts persuading her with his words. Ironically, he mentioned his wealth and even though he told Nora if she would want to leave, she must not take his things with herself but Nora indicated that she does not care about his wealth anymore. For Nora, her action was the right thing because she felt trapped and miserable. Torvald not only does not treat her as his wife, but he also could not comprehend what she has done for him.

In addition, this demonstrates that there was not any love between them. "Our home has been nothing but a playroom. I have been your doll-wife, just as at home I was papa's doll-child". Her exit is a new start to find herself and have a chance to grow up and be a woman.

In conclusion, I personally believe that Nora was not justified to leave the way she did. She left her kids to the man that she called a stranger. A marriage is a commitment and with it comes responsibilities. In a better scenario, she could stay and try to turn things around, or she could leave with her children in order to not leave them alone.
